I just completed a server upgrade project last night. We moved one of our SQL servers from Server 2008 with SQL 2008 on old hardware, to Server 2012 R2 with SQL 2012 on newer hardware by doing a fresh installation of everything. We own a license key for Server 2012 R2 Datacenter, but I installed Standard.
