Dear Microsoft Activation Support,

Windows Update suddenly stopped working properly on a home-built computer a local technician made for me, although it has been working just fine for the past 10 months (showing 'Successful' for each of the Update items, many every month).

Now, the History mostly shows 'Failed,' but sometimes an update or two would show 'Successful' for a few minutes, but then when I rebooted, it says that Windows Update was never run on the computer and all my History is gone, including all those of the past 10 months! And a few times it even said that Windows Update never 'checked for updates' even though I did 'Check for updates' minutes before, in fact, many times! Windows 7 is working, my programs are working, it's just that Windows Update isn't working and I know how important it is to have my operating system up-to-date with the most-recent bug fixes and security enhancements.

So I took it in to him for repair. He said I had bad RAM and he 'replaced the RAM' and also 'installed Windows 7 from scratch.'

When I got the computer back, I re-installed all my programs and all my files. Windows Update appeared to be working just fine. Then, a couple of days later, I checked 'Computer, Properties' and it said '1 day until automatic Activation.' Not wanting to wait until the computer stopped working, I clicked Activate Now. It asked for a Product Key. I did not get a Windows 7 DVD from the person who built my computer so I have no Product Key.

I called him and he said 'don't worry, it's a volume license' and that he would connect to my computer and enter it.

I let him connect to my computer via www.mikogo.com and he entered this Product Key (I recorded the session, so I have it verbatim):

That key failed to Activate. I watched as he selected 'Use the automated phone system to activate' -- but I don't think he had sufficient time to do Step 1, which is to call a toll-free number, then enter (or say) all the numbers shown as the installation ID (which are 9 sets of numbers, 6 numbers in each set, for a total of 54 numbers), then get an automated (or human) response. Actually, I think he may have used a KeyGen or Crack to get the Confirmation ID because he worked pretty quickly and this all happened very fast.

Windows is, in fact, now Activated, but now I'm having second thoughts. I'm wondering if my Windows 7 is genuine and properly activated, or if I've got some kind of pirated copy that may cause me who-knows-what kind of problems in the future.

I called Microsoft and they said I should post the details at this website and that Microsoft would confirm within 24 hours whether the above Key (the so-called 'volume license') and/or Confirmation ID are legitimate or not.
